Momma Bird's Birdie Bread

By Tammy Kramer

With a diverse flock the size we have, and the need to provide wholesome and nutritious foods every day, we're always on the lookout for an easy way to provide both. We recently found it in the form of Momma Bird's Birdie Bread. We have our favorite recipes which we collected and perfected over the years. Our birds loved them, Phinz - Our Black headed Caique, prefers to dine alone.but it meant extra effort in the shopping and measuring, cleaning and cutting, on and on. When we were done with the cooking (and the clean up), I'd wasted half the day.

The end result was well appreciated, as long as I didn't make too much. Would you eat left over meat loaf 8 nights in a row? My flock loves my birdie bread recipe, but after a few days, they're ready for a change, too. Momma Bird's have six different flavors to choose from! That's enough variety to really mix things up around our house.

When I bake, I still take a couple hours - but I'll make up a few batches of several different flavors. This way, I can portion out one flavor today and different flavors for other days. I've learned which birds prefer one flavor over the other and further reduce waste.

Momma Bird's breads all freeze exceptionally well, too. I bake them in a mix of mini loaves and muffin pans according to my flocks preferences, then freeze in baggies based on the flavor. I pop the next day's supply out onto the counter after my late night hand feeding and they are ready for morning feeding rounds. It couldn't be easier!

Make sure you label these breads 'For the Birds'! They look just like the fruit and nut breads Dave fixes this time of year. In case you were wondering, they taste very much like them, too - just not as sweet (so Dave tells me). Try a bag yourself - well, let your winged flock try it.Conner shares (most of the time nicely) with Zoe.
