Also known as the New Zealand Parakeet and Red-crowned Parakeet, the Kakariki (cah-cah ree-key) is native to New Zealand. Kakariki means "small parrot" in Maori (the official language of New Zealand). They are endangered in the wild, and require special permits to keep in New Zealand, and rather difficult to find in the US. They are very playful and full of energy. Kakarikis do need a larger sized cage for their small stature, and will keep you entertained with their activity level. They need lots of exercise and play time.
