Supplement Planning

The Birdcare Company has created several planning tools to help us plan for the type and amount of supplements needed for various types of flocks. They provide these helpful tools free of charge. We provide the spreadsheets as a convenience for you to download and try for yourself. You'll need a spreadsheet application such as Microsoft  Excel (or a program capable of opening and working with an Excel spreadsheet).

You will need to enter certain details about your flock and the program will calculate the types and amount of supplements you will need (including when you will need to use them). If you breed, it also provides you with a schedule of suggestions to help optimize your season.

There are different plans based upon different types of birds. Be sure you are using the right plan for the type of bird in your flock. You will also need to know the average weight of the birds in your flock, in grams. We provide estimates for you as a guide, but you should develop a record based upon your own flock. It's very easy to keep a log. Weigh routinely at the same time of the day (we like first thing in the morning before morning feedings). You need a good gram scale and a notebook (or an Excel spreadsheet would do).

Typical bird weights
Foreign finches 10-20grams
Canaries 30grams
Budgies (pet) 50g
Lovebirds 50g
Cockatiels 100g
Rosellas 130g
Timnehs 300g
Congo greys 400g
Amazons 400-500g
Cockatoos 300-750g
Large macaws 1000g
Hyacinths 1200g
